Football Season! Go Cats Go!!!!

Tonight is the start of the Wildcat Football Season! Go Cats!! As a lot of you know, Rison is a football town and tonight we start off playing the Dragons of Junction City. It's going to be a tough first game but I think we can pull it off!

The Giver

The book The Giver by Lois Lowry is a science fiction book about a boy named Jonas. It is a story set in a future society. There is no conflict, unemployment, poverty, divorce , or inequality in this society. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of "Receiver of Memory" by the Elders. The people are happy in this society because they know of no other. Jonas doesn't know if he should stay in the community where he was born, a community with no love, color, music, and knowledge, to speak of, or to run away to a new place to see what he is missing and to live a full life.

Book Review

This is the story by Jerry Spinelli about Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee, a young orphaned white boy, who lost his parents in a trolley accident, confronts racism in a small town and tries to find a home where there is none. It tells about how far and how fast he runs, the number of touchdowns he scores and the unusual home runs he hits. And tells about the kids from the black East End and the white West End of town, and mixing them in such a way that prejudices are forgotten. It's a great book for middle school children, because it teaches a lesson of acceptance no matter what color you are. You've got to read this book!!!

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about the life of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the young daughter of an Alabama lawyer. It tells a story about Scout and brother Jem and their fight of prejudice through the example of their father. Their father, Atticus Finch has taken on the defense of a black man falsely charged with raping a white woman in the early 1930's. The novel tells of the causes and effects of racism, and tells of the tolerance, courage, compassion, and justice of a family in a small southern town. We see Scout grow and come to understand her town, her family, and herself. Read this novel to see what happens next!

Book Review

Ramona's World by Beverly Cleary is a wonderful book for younger middle school children. The book tells about Ramona's everyday struggles from spelling words to having a crush on her older friend, Danny, the Yard Ape. Ramona has a hard time with her older sister Beezus now that she's a teenager, and having struggles of her own, as most high school children do. Now Ramona has lost her position as the younger child in the family, thanks to her baby sister Roberta. Read this book to see how a young girl named Ramona deals with everyday life!!!
